So... does anyone really know? Ok all you mothers out there, we heard the baby's heartbeat again today (I LOVE that little choo choo train in my belly!) and the doctor said, "No promises, but that sounds like a girl's heartbeat..." because it was fairly high I guess, at 160 bpm. I have heard the whole time that that's an old wives tale! I didn't want to tell doc I don't think he really knew what he was talking about but is it true or not?! Do babies have different heart rates based on gender? Tell me whatyou know! Come on, give up the goods.
Here's my doc and me, just this afternoon. For some reason this is how he listened to the heartbeat. hahaha can you imagine? As if my tummy looks like that at 15 weeks!

The theory states that if your baby's heart rate was 140 beats per minute and above, you would be having a girl. If the heart rate was under 140 beats per minute, then you would be having a boy.

Actually, there is no correlation between fetal heart rate and gender -- and it has been studied. There is recent study, "Sex, Heart Rate, and Age" from Terry J. DuBose, M.S., RDMS; Director Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, which indicates there is no correlation between fetal heart rate and the gender of the baby. This is an "old wive's tale" that will not die.

Having said that, it is fun to try to guess gender based on heart rate, and because we have no other ways of doing this (short of amniocentisis and ultrasound), it is harmless enough.

You will find, too, that as gestation advances and your baby's neurological system matures, the heart rate will slow a bit. So, it looks like we all start out female, which genetically happens to be true.

Hey, Mer,hope that helps!

Ummm your doc must have luck with that because if that was the case Berlin would have been a boy. She had a very low fetal hb rate. But I do hope you have a girl...they are so fun...but I hope you don't ever ask her if she used butter to get her jeans on:)

Oh Mera I still can't believe you are pregnant:) Even though I am a momma myself it is just so weird! Keep us updated on that little baby regularly!
